I write to openly petition city authorities about the unintended and tragic effects that the N1 Highway, also known as the George Walker Bush Motorway, continue to have on residents and motorists in communities along the road and on Ghanaians in general. Despite a high profile meeting held last week by authorities to find solutions to the problem, the number of reported fatalities on the road continues to rise; a clear indication that road users remain vulnerable because they are unaware of the dangers the new road poses to them. To raise the needed awareness on the dangers of the road, I wish to advise that, the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) undertakes and or intensify their Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns, if they are already engaged in one, to drive home the point that the N1 road is “dangerous” and care must be taken by users at all times. I also wish to call on the authorities concerned to as a matter of urgency, erect adequate road signs and symbols, such as “Danger !“, “Do Not Cross Road Here”, “Use Foot Bridge Ahead”, “Stop” etc.; as well as prescribe speed limits for drivers who erroneously think there are no limits when driving on a motorway. It is important for authorities to understand that the urban communities affected, existed before the construction of the road and would require adequate IEC to be able to appreciate the dangers the new development poses to them. I expect the Department of Urban Roads and the Accra Metropolitan Authority, (AMA) in particular, to take immediate steps to have adequate signs erected to prevent further fatalities on the road.
