A Circuit Court at Dormaa has remanded two persons, Kwabena Builsa, a sand-winner and Yaw Obiri, unemployed in prison custody for one month each for allegedly possessing dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
The two who were arrested at separate drinking spots at Dormaa-Ahenkro during a joint military-police swoop on August 9, this year, were ordered to re-appear before the Court on September 12, 2007 for sentence.
The Presiding Judge, Mr Justice Vincent Carl Senu, explained that the suspects month-long remand was to allow ample time for the police to forensic examination of the leaves.
Detective Sergeant Charles Agovi told the court that the joint military-police patrol team was prompted by persistent complaints about the activities at drinking-spots in Dormaa Ahenkro that had been turned into "wee markets".
"On their rounds, members of the team bumped into Kwabena
Builsa at a popular drinking spot near the Dormaa-Ahenkro Methodist Chapel and he was arrested when he attempted to flee", Sgt Agovi said.
He said when Builsa was searched, four wrapped rolls of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana were found on him.
Sgt Agovi said Yaw Obiri was also picked up at another drinking spot near a hotel at Dormaa-Ahenkro.
He said at the sight of the team, the suspect hurriedly slipped something into his right side pocket, which the team later found out to be dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
The prosecution said both suspects claimed ownership of the substances found on them.
