Mr Amos Adom, District Officer in-charge of Post Harvest and Engineering of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) in the Ahafo-Ano South District has appealed to farmers to maintain quality storage principles and directives at all times in their activities.
He said cereals if well treated with agro-chemicals could be stored for about 20 years.
Mr Adom was addressing farmers at separate meetings at Kunsu-Camp, Adukrom and Dunyan-Nkwanta in Ashanti on Tuesday as part of his familiarization tour to educate them on the proper storage of their produce.
He said diligent observation and taking of instructions from agricultural extension agents could equip them with the best knowledge on how to store, manage and process local cereals such as maize, beans, rice and others to last longer.
Mr Adom said filth, adequate water, poor storage facilities and wrong time of harvest were some of the factors that affects their produce.
Mrs Ernestina Ankai-Taylor, District Agricultural Officer in-charge of Women-in-Agriculture Development (WIAD), advised women to adopt backyard gardens to produce vegetables and other foods to support their families.
She urged them to form women groups to be able to assess credit facilities from financial institutions to expand their farms and improve their livelihood.
