Mr Gilbert Awonyagah, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), has appealed to barbering salon operators to adopt effective measures to eliminate quack operators among them.
This would enhance professionalism in the sector, Mr Awonyagah said in a speech read for him at the second national quadrennial delegates' conference of the Ghana Association of Barbers and Barbering Salon Operators in Kumasi on Wednesday.
The two-day conference being attended by 55 delegates selected from Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra, Volta and Upper East regions, was under the theme: "Forging Ahead in Unity".
He said the informal arm of the ICU was vital in nation building through job creation, skill acquisition and as a major campaigner against the deadly disease HIV/AIDS.
Mr Awonyagah asked the Association to bring professionalism into the industry through re-training of its members to update their skills.
He called on Assemblies under the local government system to collaborate with the informal sector through the ICU in fixing taxes and property rates.
Mr Emmanuel Sefakor Kwami, Ashanti Regional Industrial Relations Officer of the ICU advised members of the Association to use approved tools and chemicals to avoid the spread of HIV/AIDS.
