Reports from Nigeria say Militant group, Boko Haram has warned that they would launch attacks on offices and installations of telecommunication service providers across that country.
Boko Haram alleged that the telecom companies, particularly MTN, Glo and Airtel, aided the arrest of its top members Abul Dadar and Kabiru Sokoto.
The group’s spokesperson, who claims to be Abul Qaqa, was said to have conveyed the warning in a telephone conference interview with journalists in Maiduguri.
Boko Haram alleged that GSM service providers- MTN, Airtel and Glo provided security agents with the call log of Boko Haram members, which helped security operatives to track down their members.
The Boko Haram spokesperson was also quoted as saying the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) has also been pencilled down to be attacked.
“We are also issuing similar threat to the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) for giving directives to GSM operatives to release information on our movements,” Qaqa said.
Qaqa was also quoted as saying “no matter what, we cannot be deterred. No amount of arrest of leaders will stop us from striking, but like I said we will strike and it will be soon.”
Meanwhile MTN Nigeria is also seeking help from the Nigerian government to protect its operations from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which says it aims to “inflict pain” on MTN and on South African petroleum company SacOil in Nigeria.
About a week ago, MEND accused South African President Jacob Zuma of interfering in “legitimate fight for justice” in the Niger Delta region.
MEND is one of the largest militant groups in the Niger Delta and has previously been linked to attacks on oil companies' operations in Nigeria.
The group focuses on exposing exploitation of workers in the Niger Delta region and the damage inflicted on the environment by the government and oil companies.
Various news media in Nigeria quoted MEND spokesperson Jomo Gbomo as saying in a statement “to the South African government, we accept your challenge and will show you how easy it is to drive your investments out of our region.”
MTN has invested $5 billion in its operations in Nigeria and has earmarked another US$1 billion for investment this year.
General Manager for MTN Nigeria’s Corporate Communications, Funmi Omogbenigun reported said in a statement that “matters related to national security are the responsibility of the government and we trust that this threat, like others, will be given the necessary attention by government.”
