Veteran gospel artiste, Dr. Mary Ghansah has expressed worry over female songwriters not getting the due recognition for their works.
In an interview with Hitz FM’s Franky 5 on 'This Is Gospel', the veteran singer, who is Director of Gospel music at Musician Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), revealed that she wrote songs for a church and was not recognised as the songwriter.
“I write most of my songs but if you are a songwriter and a lady you are not recognised. You write a song for the church (but) it’s not all the time that it is appreciated or recognised,” she said.
She also added that due to the listeners’ preference of church hymns and popular gospel songs, it took a lot of promotions to get a self-written song to be accepted.
“If you pick the common Pentecost songs, it’s a sing-along and most people want songs they can sing along but God called us to write songs for the church so I’m in my lane,” Dr Ghansah said.
She added that “Once a while I could pick a song from here and there but 90% (to) 95% of my songs I write them myself. Sometimes you meet somebody and the person is even singing your song, he doesn’t know you wrote that song so you keep quiet and enjoy it in a way.”
