The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation(GBC)has defended its decision to allow paid political broadcasts to be carried on its networks nationwide.
Nana Akuffo-Addo, one of the aspirants for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)flagbearership, is expected to make a live nationwide paid political broadcast on the networks of the national public broadcaster on Tuesday evening.
The broadcast will be shown on GTV later in the evening.
In the light of the broadcaster’s refusal to allow the NDC’s flagbearer in the last elections, Prof. Evans Atta-Mills the same privilege there have been some public criticisms of the GBC.
When Joy News’ Matilda Asante asked the Director-General (DG) of the GBC, Mr. Ampem Darko what has changed, he said “you are talking about 2002, we are now in 2007.”
He was however quick to add that, in 2006 when the NDC presidential aspirants were campaigning to be flagbearers, GTV sold air time to them to advertise themselves. He cited the fact that Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah appeared several times on the network to campaign.
He also said when the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) begin their campaigns, GBC will give them the same opportunity.
The GBC Boss admitted in the interview that should Nana Addo say anything libelous, the station would jointly be held liable, but he gave the assurance that no such thing will happen.
He also added that the station will sell airtime to whoever can afford its rates.
