The Asante Development Union (ADU) is finalizing arrangements to hit the streets of Kumasi on Friday, February 3, 2012 in a demonstration against the piloting of the health capitation in the region. The action follows a stalled meeting with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to suspend the policy implementation, which has attracted widespread opposition. The ADU initially scheduled last Monday to embark on what leaders say will be “massive and continuous demonstrations” against the capitation scheme. The planned action was put on hold to make room for discussions with the project implementers, the NHIA. But Coordinator of the non-profit organization, Edmond Oppong-Peprah, says the meeting could not reach a consensus. “We’ll not accept the implementation of the capitation in the region”, he stressed. Mr. Oppong-Peprah says the Union has no option than to embark on series of demonstrations against the health capitation. “The only reason why we halted the demonstration was with the view that the meeting will give the NHIA the opportunity to withdraw the policy. But obviously they’ve been very adamant; therefore we’re going back to our old decision to embark on [a] demonstration, starting this Friday,” he told Luv Fm. The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners and the Ghana Registered Midwives Association have suspended their services to subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme, following unresolved upheavals in the capitation implementation. Some residents have called on government to swiftly intervene to salvage the situation.
