Police say the 46 year old man who died after alleged assault on him by Agbobloshie police personnel was arrested for stealing.
The family of Augustine Owusu claimed he was arrested at dawn, Thursday, without any charge or explannation and beaten to death.
But Corporal Bright Tiaso of the Greater Accra Region Public Affairs of Police told Joy News the deceased was arrested for stealing.
According to him Owusu was arrested following complaints made by his employees.
Corporal Tiaso said Augustine Owusu, who works with Uniliver Ghana Company Ltd stole an amount of GH¢20,000 from his company leading to his arrest last Thursday.
He was left naked, tortured with a broken neck, nose and blood stained body, his wife alleged.
She said her husband died shortly after his arrival at the Police Hospital.
Corporal Tiaso has however, expressed disappointment at the family’s denial of the fact that they were informed before the arrest was made saying, “... when an arrest warrant is issued, the police explains to whosoever is involved before he is carried to the police station for investigation to commence.”
He said since the family has made the Inspector General of Police (IGP) aware of the case, they should be rest assured that the end result would be given.
The family has however send the body to the Koler-Bu Teaching Hospital for autopsy while investigation into the case is still going on.
