The Sunyani Magistrate Court “B” has remanded 51 suspects into prison custody for their alleged involvement in the violence at Kwame Danso, the capital of the Sene District in the Brong Ahafo Region.
The incident resulted in the death of two persons and injury to two others, including a policeman, Lance Corporal Felix Dankwa, who was beaten until he became unconscious.
The 51 accused persons who have been charged with murder under section 46 of Act 29, would reappear before the court presided over by Mr Joseph Mensah on January 23, 2012.
Their pleas were not taken.
Mr Mensah ordered the police to quicken their investigations into the matter.
Counsel for the 51 accused persons, Mr Frimpong Boamah, told the court that on the next hearing date he would make an application for most of the accused persons to be discharged while some will be granted bail.
He said to him it would be very difficult for the prosecution to establish a charge of murder against the accused persons.
The facts of the case presented by Chief Inspector Kingsley Baafi were that the complainants in the case are policemen stationed at Kwame Danso in the Brong Ahafo Region while the accused persons are natives of Kwame Danso and its environs who belong to the Dwan clan.
He said on January 3, 2012 the accused persons and many others on the run embarked on a violent demonstration against some people who they claimed have created an impediment in the enstoolment of the Dwan chief.
Chief Inspector Baafi said the accused persons’ active participation in the demonstration led to the death of two persons namely, Kwabena Gyaki, 34 and Atta Kwasi, 32.
He said they also attacked Lance Corporal Felix Dankwa then armed with AK47 and assaulted him severely and snatched his service rifle from him.
The prosecutor told the court that when the accused persons realised that the policeman was unconscious they abandoned him and then went to a garage where the policemen’s car was parked and set the vehicle ablaze.
Chief Inspector Baafi said the policeman who was badly beaten was flown to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for medical treatment while one other person yet to be identified also sustained serious injuries.
He said as at now there was tension at Kwame Danso and, therefore, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) had imposed a curfew on the area.
Chief Inspector Baafi told the court that investigations into the case had not been completed and, therefore, prayed the court to remand all the accused persons into prison custody for further investigations.
As at the time of filing this report, the REGSEC chaired by the Regional Minister, Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo was meeting to review the curfew.
