Mr Boakye Yiadom Boateng, 30, Sales and Operations Manager of a Guinness distribution company in Sunyani has been elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate to contest the Asutifi South Constituency seat next year.
Mr Boateng polled 40 votes out of 74 valid ballots to beat two other contenders, Mr Robert Dwomo Mensah, a teacher who had 32 votes and Mrs. Yvonne Opoku Kwarteng, also a teacher, who got two votes.
The election was conducted and supervised by the officials of the Electoral commission.
Addressing the delegates prior to the election, Nana Ohene Ntow, General Secretary of the NPP, said the government cherished grassroots democracy and would make sure the 2008 elections were free and fair, devoid of intimidation and unnecessary tensions.
"Gone are the days when presidential and parliamentary elections are associated with chaotic confrontations, rancour and unnecessary tensions in the interest of some politicians", he stated.
Nana Ntow said the Party was poised to capturing all "orphan" constituencies in the Brong Ahafo region.
This he explained by constituencies won by the National the Democratic congress.
He said the NPP was forming polling station support groups which would embark on house-to-house campaign and appealed to the party membership to intensify their campaign to woo more people to join the party.
Mr. Kwasi Adu Gyan, regional NPP chairman, called on delegates and the candidates to rally solidly behind each other to ensure resounding victory.
In a related development, Mr. George Yaw Boakye, Asunafo South District Chief Executive, has been elected by popular acclamation to contest the Asunafo South Constituency seat.
