A group of health professional from Boston Children Hospital of the Harvard University in the USA performed surgery on children with heart diseases in Kumasi.
The American hospital has been collaborating with Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KAT) on such initiatives for over ten years.
About 140 children benefited from the voluntary care by the group said to have been formed by a Ghanaian surgeon, Dr, Francis Fynn Thompson.
Group leader, Beverly Small, says children with congenital heart diseases are the focus of the hospital.
The group is made up of about 30 pediatricians, nurses, surgeons, pharmacist, biomedical experts and other volunteers.
Madam Small says members were excited to visit the Manhyia Place since 2007 when they first came to Ghana.
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, lauded the collaboration between the American and Ghanaian medical professionals to save lives.
Cardiac Surgeon at Komfo Anokye Hospital, Dr, Isaac Okyere, was overwhelmed with the number of open-heart diseases saved so far.
It costs about $50 thousand for heart a surgery in the USA, but at Korle Bu, it ranges from 10 to 20 thousand dollars.
Some Ghanaian doctors have received training on how to handle equipment brought in by the US team.
The equipment will be left by the US team for use by the local doctors.
