Police seize unlicensed motorbikes

Forty-two motorbikes and two vehicles have been intercepted by the Tesano Police in a special operation in Accra. Briefing the Times, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mary Attoh Annang of the Motor Traffic Unit (MTU), said the exercise was prompted by the outcry over the use of unregistered motorbikes by some unscrupulous people to commit various crimes including snatching of mobile phones from people. She cited instances of registered motorbikes knocking down people and when these are arrested and taken to the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Authority (DVLA), their registration were found to be fake. "This operation is to allow only genuine motorbikes to operate on the road," she said. "Criminals have taken advantage of this unregistered and fake registered bikes to harm people in the streets. "This operation help check the activities of these criminals who have been snatching mobile phones and bags as well as all other criminal acts," she added. "It is also to check drivers with fake licences and those without licence". The Divisional Commander of Tesano Police Station, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Duku said, "this is an ongoing operation and defaulting motorbikes and cars would be impounded". "Today’s operation is a reminder to motorists who have not yet registered to to do so," he said and advised motorists to carry their licences along with them. The Ghanaian Times
