Notorious robbers nabbed

The Berekum Police have arrested two notorious armed robbers who are believed to be part of a robbery gang terrorizing residents of Berekum. The police have also mounted a manhunt for one of the suspects who managed to escape. The two alleged criminals, Kwame Boateng, 29 and Joseph Kwabena Jumah, 32, all unemployed, were nabbed by the Berekum police last Friday, upon a tip off. One of the robbers, Daily Guide gathered, was said to be a son of an NDC Chairman in the Berekum Constituency. Briefing the press, the Berekum Divisional Police Commander, ACP Edward Oduro-Kwarteng, said his men, at about 1200 hours on the said day, acting upon intelligence, intercepted a taxi cab with Kwame Boateng on board. He said a search on the cab revealed a single barrel pump action gun, four pieces of AAA cartridges, two screw drivers and a double-edged dagger concealed in a fertilizer sack in the trunk of the car. During interrogations, he stated, Kwame Boateng claimed ownership and mentioned Joseph Kwabena Jumah as his accomplice. ACP Oduro-Kwarteng pointed out that the police proceeded to the residence of Jumah at Koraso, a suburb of Berekum, and a search conducted in his room revealed a single pump action gun and a single barrel Baikal shotgun hidden in the ceiling of the room. According to the police boss, their investigations revealed that the suspects, who were on Monday slapped with 140-day jail term each in hard labour by a Berekum Circuit Court broke into the store of a licensed arm dealer at Berekum and stole the items from the showcase of the arms dealer and an amount of GH¢600, on November 30,2011. He said the robbers gained access to the store by removing the roofing sheets of the store and made away with the guns, and money which was kept in a drawer and shared it among themselves. The police chief said GH¢200 out of the total amount stolen was retrieved from the suspects when the arrest was made. ACP Oduro-Kwarteng thanked members of the public for their cooperation in arresting the notorious armed robbers, assuring them that the identities of the informants would be kept secret. “The public should also be rest assured that police are tor peace and shall never shirk that responsibility,” he stated.
