Swedish coach Tom Strand quits Great Olympics

Tom Strand, a former MTN FA Cup champion with Medeama, has terminated his contract with relegation threatened Accra Great Olympics following the reappointment of Godwin Attram as head coach.

"I have resigned from Great Olympics and I've told the club's top officials. They don't want me and I think it's time for me to move on," Strand told Ghanasoccernet.com.

"I have sent my letter to them and hopefully we can reach a mutual agreement to terminate my contract.”

His resignation comes on the heels of his inability to produce the expected results five months after taking over from his current successor, Godwin Attram, who oversaw the team’s return to the Premier League from the Division One League.

In an interview with Graphic sports, the former coach expressed the view that, it was the right time to quit the club to give another coach a chance as they struggle to avoid relegation to the lower tier division.

“I felt it was the right time to quit the club after failing to produce what was required of me by Olympics. This will give an opportunity to another coach to help the club in its relegation struggle.”

He had nothing but edifying words for Attram who he referred to as a very good trainer capable of helping the team avoid the drop.

"Godwin Attram is a very good trainer who is capable of helping the club to avoid exiting the top flight and I wish him all the best in his endeavour," Coach Strand said.

The coach declined to comment on whether he was owed by the club or if he had reached an agreement for any form of financial compensation with the club’s management.

Several reports, however, claim that the club owes the coach.

Coach Tom Strand previously managed FA Cup holders Bechem United and Medeama SC prior to taking over the Accra Gt. Olympics bench in Week 13 under somewhat contentious circumstances that saw Attram’s role reduced to that of an assistant.

The Wonder Club has languished in the bottom places for a greater part of the season in the 16 team league. And with just four matches to end the season, they have the 15th spot on 27points, 6points off the first safe spot. They will have to win their remaining matches to have a realistic chance of surviving relegation.
