A self styled journalist is in the grips of the law for posing as a reporter of the Ghanaian Times newspaper in Accra.
The suspect, Victor Samuel Nana Yokor Ekon, 34, a resident of Taifa in Accra, was said to have attended a programme at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) and falsely introduced himself as a journalist with a paper.
A search conducted on him revealed a foreign newspaper by the name “The Times”.
Briefing the Times in Accra on Friday, the Osu District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mabel Artteh, said a Nigerian lecturer who arrived in the country for a workshop at the Accra International Conference Centre on November 21, noticed the suspect and decided to know his identity and the media organisation he works for.
According to the commander, the suspect could not produce an identity card but a search revealed the foreign newspaper.
The Nigerian, according to the police, decided to lodge a complaint at the police station against the suspect.
The commander said the complainant told the police that her suspicion was aroused when she left the conference room to take a picture with the other participants leaving her items such as a laptop, two phones, a passport, 370 dollars, 12,000 Naira and GH¢25 behind.
DSP Artteh said when she came back she could not find the items and suspected Ekon of taking them.
DSP Artteh said the complainant was taken to the Osu Police for further investigations into the case.
The suspect is said to have been granted police enquiry bail with a surety, but had since not reported to the station.
