Two men have been arrested and handed over to the police at Kumasi on Tuesday, for allegedly stealing cable wires belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Malam Yahaya, a 20-year-old blacksmith resident in Aboabo and Antwi Duku, a 21-year-old taxi driver from Oforikrom, all in Kumasi, are believed to be members of cable stealing syndicate in the Kumasi Metropolis.
Mr. John Datuah, a Kumasi-based electrical contractor, who caused the culprits to be arrested, briefed GNA at the Central Police Station on the matter.
He said while in his car towards Adum from Atonsu, he spotted the suspects carrying the cables in a sack and asked them to stop but they bolted.
Mr. Datuah said he raised the alarm and some volunteers chased and arrested the suspects and they were handed over to officials of the
Ashanti Regional ECG.
Mr. William Boateng, the ECG Regional Public Relations Officer, sent the suspects to police.
He said that the stolen cables were to be used for rehabilitation works at ECG stations at Airport Roundabout in Kumasi, which served Asante-Mampong, Manhyia and other areas.
He said ECG was losing huge sums of money through cable theft and appealed to the general public to assist the ECG and the security services to arrest cable thieves.
The police at Kumasi confirmed the alleged theft and said the suspects would be prosecuted.
