Twelve canoes loaded with nets and fish were destroyed and a dozen porters seriously injured when strong tidal waves hit fishermen returning from sea last Monday at Mumford, a fishing community in the Gomoa District.
The injured were rushed to the Apam Catholic hospital, Opanyin Kofi Gyasi, Acting Chief Fisherman told the Ghana News Agency at Mumford.
Opanyin Gyasi said more than 200 crates of fish being conveyed in canoes from fishing vessels at the anchorage were lost.
Mr. Clement Acquaye, Assembly Member for Odukum Electoral Area of Mumford, said the incidence of tidal wave destructions had become an annual recurrence, leading to the migration of many fishing groups.
Mr Eric Adoko, the town's secretary appealed to government to expedite work on the construction of a proposed landing site for the area.
He also appealed to the Ministry of Fisheries and the National Disaster Management Organisation to help those whose canoes were damaged by tidal waves to repair them.
