He's built teams. He's broken them. He's rebuilt them. Always, he's kept winning. Thirty-seven trophies have been collected. He has signed big names and made them giants. He has turned boys into legends.
How fitting it is that Steve Bruce should be the visiting manager for the silver anniversary celebrations. As captain, he led United to their first league title under Ferguson in 1993 - ending a painful 26-year wait for the club.
He personified his manager's ruthless never-say-die winning spirit on the pitch. His two goals at home to Sheffield Wednesday in April of that year, the second well into stoppage time, propelled United above Villa. From there, they never lost top spot.
Bruce has never beaten his old mentor as a manager in 17 attempts. Sunderland haven't won at United since 1968 either. Despite an improved run of late with just one defeat in four games, they shouldn't spoil the party this time.
United simply must atone for the misery of their last home league game - the 6-1 thrashing by title rivals Manchester City. They haven't conceded in three games since then. Sir Alex read the riot act, just as he's been doing for 25 years - and it worked yet again.
Half of his squad weren't even born when he took charge. But they all know his demands. They all know the legacy. A successive home defeat will not be an option.
TEAM NEWS
Sir Alex Ferguson though celebrating 25 years at the club on Sunday, will still be concerned by the depleted numbers of his midfield as the injury list continues to grow.
Brazil international Anderson may miss out with Sir Alex confirming in his prematch press conference that he picked up a knock against Otelul Galati in midweek, while Ryan Giggs and Tom Cleverley remain sidelined.
Michael Carrick could be involved following his recent injury, while Darren Fletcher is a doubt after he missed the Red Devils' win over the Romanian champions. So a third consecutive game in midfield for Wayne Rooney would not be surprising. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Paul Pogba could make the bench.
Sunderland travels to Old Trafford with considerably less to think about on the injury front, although a fractured nose and eye-socket for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is a massive blow with Black Cats’ third choice stopper Keiran Westwood set to step up with Craig Gordon still out.
Former United cult-hero John O’Shea will have to wait for his Old Trafford Premier League return for another season after being ruled out due to a hamstring injury, leaving Steve Bruce with just one other injury related concern. Fraizer Campbell looks set to return in December, about six months ahead of schedule.
Aside from injuries, Sunderland’s only other player who will miss the trip to Manchester is Titus Bramble, who has been suspended by the club while his off-field behaviour is investigated.
Manchester United vs. Sunderland kicks-off at 3pm on Joy Sports and Adom-TV on Multi-TV.
