Jimle Area Council in the Yendi District, under the Community Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP), has constructed 26 market stalls and a 20-unit open shed at a cost of GHc15,000(150 million cedis).
The World Bank funded the project and executed under the Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) of CBRDP based on the felt need of the people.
The project was completed within 100 days.
Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani, Yendi District Chief Executive inaugurating the project at Jimle on Wednesday, said it was a manifestation of the judicious application of the capacity building exercise under CBRDP.
He explained that the project was undertaken to generate revenue and therefore urged the council, chiefs and elders to assist the assembly to tap the revenue potentials for the benefit of the area.
Alhaji Tijani urged the council to ensure that the market committee to be established would work in concert with stakeholders to ensure its smooth operations and revenue mobilisation.
Mr Edward Osei, Northern Regional Institutions Development Specialist of CBRDP, said the council was the first in the country to undertake and successfully complete a project under the RRI.
He said the project had demonstrated the ability of substructures of the assemblies to initiate and undertake development projects on their own adding, "it also indicates that the people now drive development and not government."
Mr Hussein Aliu, Secretary of the council, appealed to development partners to assist the people with the provision of other social amenities, particularly water.
