A 24-year-old student of the Assin Fosu Secondary Technical School has been jailed three years by the Ashaiman Circuit Court for knocking down and killing an 85-year-old man.
Samuel Apaw, who was convicted on his own plea, broke down and wept bitterly, after the sentence.
The court, presided over by Mr. Seyram Tsatsu Yao Azumah, was told that on August 18, at about 9:00.a.m, Apaw was driving a Kia Sephia taxi cab with registration number GN 4714 Y from the Tema fishing harbour to Tema New Town.
On reaching a spot opposite the Full Gospel Church Junction, his cab knocked down Kwaku Larbi, 85, who was crossing the road.
Apaw stopped and picked the victim who sustained serious injuries to the Tema General Hospital for treatment and was admitted.
Apaw then reported the incident to the police who visited the victim at the hospital.
On August 30, the victim passed away and Samuel Apaw was charged for reckless driving.
The medical officer on duty, Dr. Martin Dum, confirmed that the death was due to the severe head injury from the accident.
