The second week of the Books and Boots competition staged in Bantama, North-Kumasi was a classic case of rain, sunshine and breathtaking silky skills.
Crowd favourite and rugged U-12 team Ashpol FC was crowned champions after they beat tournament show boys Major FC.
In what was a fitting finale, neither side was able to produce a goal within regulation time thus pushing the game to the nervy penalty shoot-out. The massive support for Ashpol propelled their team to win 3-2 via the penalty spot.
A few hours before the final, all the participating teams were assembled by Coach Sani Pollux and brought to the Akosa Park. Once gathered, the Active Minds Reading Club took over under the gentle guidance of Selorm Ameyedowe, Eddy Ameh and Joyce Owusu. As was the scenario in Manhyia for week 1, the pupils in Bantama were fully focused when it came to reading out loud, debating themes of the books they read and the odd spelling drill.
As always, representatives of Voltic Mineral Water and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation played active participatory roles during the reading and spelling sessions. This was followed by a fun filled Q and A session with the pupils.
Once the chosen passages from books had been read, the Bantama soccer edition took centre stage.
The finest U-12 soccer teams in the community primed for action with Major FC, Humburg FC, Ashpol FC and United Boys all bent on winning the gala to book a place in the regional final scheduled for March 2012.
The kids from Major FC were a delight to watch as they thrilled the fans with some very impressive teamwork, one touch play and individual brilliance. In the most comprehensive performance by any team so far, Major FC trashed United Boys by 3 goals to nil. Atta Sekyere grabbed two goals with Justice Antwi getting the third with brilliant touches.
