A leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey, has asked all candidates seeking to be the party's flag bearer to carefully weigh their chances before the December Congress. Ala Adjetey, a National Executive member says the NPP is not short of leaders, therefore candidates putting themselves up should convince themselves that they fit the bill, failing which they should quit the race. Mr Ala Adjetey in 1993 filed to contest the party's presidential ticket but pulled out at the very last minute citing a lack of support. And with the benefit of his experience, he wants candidates in the race today to do the same. Speaking to Joy News’ Editor, Matilda Asante about the impending congress and the choice of a presidential candidate for the ruling party, he said the candidates will do themselves and the party a great disservice if they go ahead and contest knowing that they do not qualify. “People should examine themselves. If they examine themselves and all 20 find that all 20 of them have a fighting chance of being selected, that is fine. Let them engage in the fight, or in the struggle but if you examine yourself as I did sometime ago, and you find that your chances of being selected are slim, it would be in your own interest and in the interest of the party and the nation that you withdraw. That’s all.” Mr. Ala Adjetey said it was possible that some of the candidates putting themselves up for the post have not examined themselves and their real chances, and it was very important they did so to see if they had the needed leadership qualities such as the ability to unite the party, which will help him implement his programme as a national leader. The renowned lawyer said if the NPP remained united, there is no reason why they cannot retain power in 2008, however claims of bickering among foot soldiers who are alleged to complain of neglect poses a real danger that can cost the party the ballot.
