The Kyidomhene of Akyem Apinamang, near Akwatia in the Eastern region, Nana Kwame Agyekum, 59, was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody for allegedly possessing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
Also remanded was Comfort Kwanor, 63, an ‘akpeteshie’ seller and accomplice.
Four plastic containers full of the leaves and seeds were found in the house of Nana Agyekum during a search by the police, and he claimed ownership when interrogated.
Their plea was not taken when they appeared before the Kade District Magistrate Court, and they are to appear again on October 7.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, ACP Kwabena Gyamerah-Yeboah, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times Wednesday, said the police had a tip-off on July 21 that Comfort Kwanor was selling Indian hemp at her drinking spot at Akyem Apinamang.
He said two policemen were sent to the premises where they found a parcel containing the leaves suspected to be Indian hemp on a table.
ACP Gyamera-Yeboah said Kwanor claimed ownership and was arrested and sent to the police station together with the dried leaves.
Upon interrogation, she admitted the offence and mentioned one Akwasi Asiedu as the one who sent the leaves to her to sell for them to share the profit.
Kwanor also said smokers of Indian hemp were hitherto buying the stuff from Nana Agyekum to smoke at her bar.
She said that she approached Nana Agyekum who decided to supply her with some of the stuff to sell.
ACP Gyamera-Yeboah said a warrant was, therefore, obtained from the court to search the premises of Nana Agyekum.
He said on September 15, a team of policemen went to the house of Nana Agyekum to search his premises and they found four plastic containers with dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
ACP Gyamera-Yeboah said when Nana Agyekum was questioned, he claimed ownership and he was arrested.
