Chile were one goal from elimination in the Confederations Cup but held off a spirited challenge from Australia to draw 1-1 and reach the semi-finals.
Chile went close through Eduardo Vargas and Arturo Vidal, bringing good stops from Brighton's new keeper Mat Ryan. As Australia hacked Chile across the pitch, it seemed they would soon concede.
However, Australia scored against the run of play when JamesTroisi latched onto a loose ball to flick over Claudio Bravo.
In the second half, Chile made the breakthrough when Martin Rodriguez reacted to a knockdown from Vargas quicker than anyone else, securing their route to the semi-finals in second place behind Germany, on five points.
Australia fought hard, but they could not build on the dominance their energy and pressing gave them for much of the match.
Chile will now face Portugal in the semis, with Germany taking on Mexico.
