In previous reports, we covered the rapid growth of the country’s healthcare industry and how it is affecting stakeholders.
Citizens now have access to better healthcare services thanks to investment from private and foreign entities. At the same time, the Ministry of Health is taking more steps to restructure the financial side of the industry.
Despite the stream of new physicians and nurses entering the industry, nurses in Ghana are still facing a number of challenges. Are the increasing workload and more challenges jeopardizing the healthcare industry as a whole?
Coping with the Challenges
The BSN to DNP online department of Bradley University recently released a report on how nurses can better deal with the challenges in their career.
Managing long hours and mandatory overtime are both essential, especially for nurses who are relatively new to the job. The long hours can make it difficult for nurses to maintain a work-life balance, especially in an industry that is growing.
At the same time, it is also necessary to manage stress. Many doctor of nurse practitioner programs are not equipping students with stress management skills. By connecting with fellow nurses and other stakeholders better, stress in the workplace can be limited.
There is one other important ingredient to managing the challenges in nursing, and that ingredient is teamwork.
It is not uncommon for nurses working in the same medical institution to start caring for each other, covering for missed shifts, and helping each other handle their workloads more effectively. Studies show that hospitals whose nurses are working together seamlessly have lower stress level and higher efficiency rate.
Increasing the Number of Nurses
Both the government and private stakeholders are working to further encourage people to become nurses. Local universities are working together with their partners in the US and Europe to create curriculums and improve nursing education in general.
The availability of online courses, especially for nursing professionals who want to pursue a higher degree, is also considered a huge advantage in today’s market.
It is also worth noting that the healthcare industry is considered among the most lucrative to enter. Despite being so challenging, nursing jobs are very rewarding. It is not surprising to find thousands of students aspiring to become a nursing professional every year. Nevertheless, it takes time before the new generation of nursing professionals are ready to enter the market.
A Sustainable Growth
What the government is focusing on right now is maintaining a sustainable growth. There is no way to speed up the nursing education process and the growth of the workforce, but there are initiatives being put in place to ensure the steady and sustainable growth of the healthcare industry.
The recent introduction of financial initiatives by the Ghanaian Ministry of Health and the launch of services like AYARISA are clear signs that healthcare in Ghana will continue to improve.
At the end of the day, stakeholders will all enjoy immense benefits from the rapid but sustainable growth of the industry and Ghana will have a more reliable healthcare system for its citizens.
