The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) have officially launched the 2017 President Cup and it will be another Super Clash.
The well attended event took place at the premises of ANFD in East Legon on Thursday, July 22.
The 2017 edition of annual football match played in honour of the first gentleman of the country will take place at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium on July 2 with the two most successful clubs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak pitching their strengths against each other.
The match itself promises to be fascinating as it will be the third meeting between both sides with the Phobians holding the aces after beating the Porcupine Warriors twice – first 1-0 in the league before recording a comprehensive 3-1 win in the Ghana @60 Anniversary game but Kotoko will be poised to avenge the back to back defeats.
Speaking at the launch, Chairman of GHALCA, Mr. Cudjo Fianoo applauded the two clubs for accepting the invitation.
“There will be no befitting fixture other than Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to usher in our new President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and we are happy the clubs have agreed to pitch their strength against each other.
He added: ” I want to thank our sponsors for coming board to support this program and I want to assure them that they will not regret been a part of GHALCA.
Also present was Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Mr. Pius Hadzide, who was full praise for GHALCA and also pledged goverment's support to ensure a successful match.
“We want to entreat the supporters of these rival teams to come to the Kumasi Sports Stadium on the 2nd of July in their numbers. By going to the stadium you will not only be supporting your respective teams but showing solidarity with the President of the country. So it is important we go to the stadium in our numbers.
He added: “This is a crucial match for us, because I want to look at whether it will be a revenge or a repeat. At the level of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority we shall do all within our powers to ensure that we have a successful program. We thank all our sponsors and all who will be associated with this endeavour in different ways.”
President Nana Akufo Addo will be expected to grace the occasion and hand over glittering trophy to the deserved winner.
This year’s President Cup is organised by GHALCA and sponsored by UBA, ANFD and StarTimes.
