A police training has ended in Accra with a call on the service to organize more refresher courses for officers to upgrade their skills.
The two-week programme on criminal prosecution and human rights abuse organised by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Faculty of Law of the Fordham Law School in the United States trained the police on Criminal Procedure, international Obligation, Gender Crime and Domestic Violence.
Mr Patrick Timbillah, Deputy Director General of Criminal Investigations Department, said more of such trainings were needed to enable the police to perform better.
"Such trainings will help make a big difference in the work of our men," he said.
Mr Timbillah said the area of importance was prosecutors as police turned into prosecutors without any training in the area.
"This training will help our men not to step on the toes of the innocent and respect human rights."
Ms Haley Horan, a student from the Fordham University, said she had learn a lot from the training and commended the police personnel at the workshop for their commitment to the training.
The workshop was organised for 100 participants but 97 participants participated.
Chief Inspector Mary Assunta of the Tema Circuit Court said more of such training should be organised for the service.
"I have been a prosecutor since 1991 and I release we have been doing a lot of mistakes. This workshop has really thought me a lot."
She said young officers must have access to such trainings since the old ones would soon retire.
Another participants said the workshop had added more value to her work and it was an eye opener.
"I would like to appeal to the service to organize such trainings for us every year," she said.
The first workshop was organised two years ago at the KNUST with only two regions but this years had participants from the 10 regions with the majority of the police officers coming from the Greater Accra Region.
