The women’s wing of the opposition new patriotic party is demanding that government takes decisive action on the importation of cheap textiles.
The women say they are worried about seizures and destruction of textiles of market women and its attendant cost.
The demand by the women follows a demonstration Tuesday by the Textile and Leather Workers Union against the importation of cheap textiles into the country.
NPP parliamentary aspirant for Ablekuma South, Ursula Owusu who addressed the press conference by the women’s wing conceded: “We are not saying we condone piracy, it is illegal and it ought to be stopped.
“However, there are many innocent victims of the actions of unscrupulous security agents who are using them to enrich themselves unfairly.”
She said the group is only helping to make the voices of the women who are “bearing the brunt” of the actions of the security agencies heard.
“Through no fault of theirs, they have bought these goods for re-sale and the goods are being seized.”
Ms Ursula Owusu said they also, on the other hand, acknowledge the fact that “the textiles industries are also suffering because of the importation of certain goods”.
She therefore challenged the government to fashion out effective ways of dealing with the problem instead of using the women as the “easy way out of solving this problem”.
