A Nutritionist, Dr. Ben Nuako is calling on the Ghana Standards Authority to beef up security at the various ports to prevent the purported importation of plastic rice.
Dr. Nauko, who is also a clinical nutritionist, further appealed to the GSA to check the quality of rice consumed by the public.
Over the past few days, videos have been circulating on social media, showing cooked rice balls bouncing off a hard surface like tennis balls. It has raised fears that they could have been prepared from what many believe is ‘plastic rice’.
Dr. Ben Nuako told Adom News such unhealthy products can cause indigestion, constipation and other forms of medical conditions that may be fatal.
He suggests that samples of all imported rice should be re-examined by both the Standards Authority and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
The Food and Drugs Authority last week, arrested two women suspected to be involved in artificially colouring oranges to boost sales.
The FDA said the police conducted a swoop at the Madina market last Tuesday after photos and a video went viral on social media.
In the video, a woman is seen with two big bowls - one a colouring solution and the other full of ripe oranges.
She dipped the oranges in the solution and waits for some minutes for the fruit to turn deep yellow.
It is believed the colour makes the fruit eye-pleasing enough to attract customers.
But FDA says the colouring is "suspicious" and condemned the practice. The officials have therefore arrested the women for questioning and possible prosecution.
The FDA faces a huge task of regulating Ghana's food and drugs market.
