A Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Health, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh popularly known as 'Napo' has reiterated calls for a de-politicisation of the appointments of chief executive officers of regulatory bodies.
His call follows a repeat broadcast of Joy FM’s documentary “When Medicines Don’t Heal” by Beatrice Adu. The programme uncovers the influx of fake drugs in Ghana.
Speaking to Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, who is also an NPP MP for Manhyia said the best way of making the regulatory bodies effective in dealing with the problem, is by making them independent of political parties.
“You have a higher number of fake drugs or counterfeit drugs in areas where there are weak regulatory system, weak enforcement of these systems, and poor regulations in the market economy; you cannot just sell willingly everywhere.
“So for the start, we must trust our regulatory system to deal with that issue. The way you can trust your regulatory system is not to subject it to political interference… The people would be responsible and can take decisions, they wouldn’t have to look over their back.”
Dr.Opoku Prempeh is looking forward to submit a paper on the issue of fake drugs to be discussed on the floor of Parliament as soon the House reconvenes.
