European Transfer deadline day throws up surprise signings

No Ghanaian international secured a move on the last day of transfers in Europe on Wednesday after growing talks of Sulley Muntari leaving Italian Serie A side Inter Milan. Sulley Muntari will stay at Inter but must work hard to convince new coach Gian Pierro Gasperini he can be of use to the former Genoa manager. The 27 year old was a transfer target for Turkish side Galatasaray but failure to reach a deal means Muntari will extend his stay at San Siro. Meanwhile the last day of the European summer transfer window produced surprising deals in five of Europe’s top leagues. England Let’s begin in England where majority of the transfer deals were loan deals between clubs in the premier league and others abroad. Portuguese Raul Meireles signed for Chelsea on a four-year contract from Liverpool while Craig Bellamy made a return to Anfield on a free transfer from Manchester City. Liverpool striker David Ngog signed a three year deal with Bolton while the Reds put Joe Cole on a season long loan move to French side Lille. Chelsea’s Yossi Benayoun completed his loan move to Arsenal alongside Mikel Arteta also joined the Gunners from Everton for an undisclosed fee. Sunderland has sealed a season-long loan deal for Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner. Stoke City have signed Peter Crouch for a club-record fee of 10 million pounds while confirming the long-expected arrival of midfielder Wilson Palacios and the signing of Cameron Jerome. Tottenham have signed England midfielder Scott Parker from West Ham, while Chelsea failed with a £40 million offer for Luka Modric. Italy Inter Milan completed the signing of forwards Mauro Zarate from Lazio on loan and Diego Forlan from Atletico Madrid. AS Roma signed Bosnia midfielder Miralem Pjanic from Olympique Lyon for 11 million Euros and Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago on loan from Real Madrid. The Capital club also swooped for Danish defender Simon Kjaer from VfL Wolfsburg and Italian striker Fabio Borini from Parma on a one-year loan. In other late deals champions AC Milan signed Palermo’s Italian midfielder Antonio Nocerino on a five-year deal while Parma picked up Italian striker Sergio Floccari from Lazio. Juventus have confirmed the signing of Netherlands international winger Eljero Elia on a four year contract from Hamburg for an £8 million fee. Germany Wolfsburg secured two loan deals, signing Alexander Hleb from Barcelona and shipped out unwanted midfielder Diego to Atletico Madrid. The club also confirmed the arrival of Brazilian defender Chris, who last played for relegated Eintracht Frankfurt. Werder Bremen confirmed the departure of Germany defender Per Mertesacker to English Premier League side Arsenal. Schalke was also busy, reaching a deal with HJK Helsinki for highly rated 21-year-old Teemu Pukki. Hamburger SV announced the signing of Croatia midfielder Ivo Ilicevic from Bundesliga rival Kaiserslautern, and the departure of Dutch winger Eljero Elia to Serie A’s Juventus. Frankfurt also announced the signing of striker Mohamadou Idrissou from Borussia Monchengladbach, which announced the departure of U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley to Chievo Verona in Italy. Spain Real Madrid have loaned midfielder Pedro Leon to Getafe in a season-long deal. Real Madrid has sent Dutch winger Royston Drenthe on loan to English side Everton for the rest of the season. Canadian-born Dutch midfielder Jonathan De Guzman has moved to Villarreal from Real Mallorca and Atletico Madrid have sold Brazil midfielder Elias to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon for 8.85 million Euros. France French champions Lille have announced the signing of Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole on a season-long loan. Evian Thornon Gaillard also announced they have completed the transfer of Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen from Liverpool.
