Joy 99.7 FM on Wednesday launched its road safety campaign in a bid to help reduce the rate of road accidents in the country.
Launching the programme, head of marketing at Joy FM, David Max-Fugah, said the campaign seeks to recruit about 50,000 drivers who will pledge to live by four simple road regulations.
The drivers will pledge not to speed beyond the permitted limit; not to make phone calls when driving; wear seat belt; and don’t drink whilst driving.
“The objective is to ensure that seven out of 10 Ghanaians would be abiding by the rules. We want to cause behavioural change in Ghanaians,” Mr Fugah explained.
Kwame Koduah Atuahene, head of Communications at the National Road Safety Commission, commended Joy FM for the initiative, and saying it is in line with their strategy to ensure that every road user plays his or her part to ensure accident-free roads. He also pledged the support of the commission to ensure that the station succeeds with the campaign.
“Beyond the education and our coordinating responsibility, making policy proposal and their like, we are in the process of developing action plans where we will assign specific responsibilities to our key stakeholders.
“We expect for instance, for the road sector agencies, to help us treat some of the roads that we have found to be killer networks; we expect that the National Ambulance Service and the Red Cross help deal with emergency as and when they arise; the police will be empowered to enforce the existing regulations together with the DVLA.”
Mr Atuahene gave a startling figure about the road accident situation in Ghana:
“On the average, six people get killed daily, on a monthly basis an average of about 150, and a year about 1800 thereabout, it is not pleasant.”
George Edah head of events and promotions said the campaign would be taken to bus terminals and institutions.
He noted that persons who comply with the tenets would be rewarded.
A hotline would be provided so that the public could call and report drivers with the campaign stickers who are flouting the regulations.
Partners of the road safety campaign are Cardinal Petroleum, Glory Oil, DVLA, National Road Safety Commission and Cowbell.
Host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah was the first to sign unto the campaign.
