Forty-five teachers from the Suhum Kraboa Coaltar District, who excelled in their profession from 2004 to 2006 have been presented with various awards at Suhum in the district.
The programme was organised under the theme "The 2007
Education Reforms, the Role of the Teacher," and the winners came from the primary and junior secondary school.
Teachers who took the first position were presented with a table
top refrigerator each, with those taking the second position receiving 14 inches colour television sets each with those winning the third position taking home ghetto blaster each.
The ceremony coincided with the presentation of 40 bicycles to
some 40 teachers serving in deprived communities by thegovernment.
Ms. Augustine M. Aboagye, the District Director of Education, expressed worry that even though government spending huge sums of money on teachers, some of them were not working up to expectation to reciprocate the gesture.
Ms. Aboagye reminded the teachers that under the new Education Reforms, which takes off in September this year, supervision of teachers work would be intensified.
She, therefore, advised teachers to refrain from absenteeism,
alcoholism and lateness to school and other negative tendencies to ensure effective teaching and learning.
Ms. Aboagye appealed to parents to cooperate with teachers to
enable them give off their best.
Mr. Michael Kofi Mensah, the District Chief Executive, said the
assembly had initiated a programme to sponsor teacher trainees from the area toward the development of education, and that so far 383 persons had benefited from the package at a total cost of 344.7
million cedis.
He urged teachers to take seriously all seminars, workshops and
other programmes concerning the New Education Reform to enable them cope with the Reform when it commences in September this year.
Mrs Ewura Abena-Ahwoi, the immediate past Eastern Regional
Director of Education urged teachers to suggest ways of ensuring
effective implementation of the Reform.
She also advised them to assist school children to harness their
potential towards national development.
