Two suspected armed robbers, who were alleged to have attacked a passenger Benz bus on the Kintampo-Tamale trunk road, have been shot dead by a police patrol team during a shoot-out.
The two alleged robbers, who were said to be part of a group of seven, allegedly blocked the Dawadawa-Kawampe section of the road in the Brong-Ahafo Region at about 11:00.p.m. at the weekend to facilitate their operation.
Superintendent Desmond K. Boampong, in charge of the Kintampo District, told the Daily Graphic via telephone that immediately the Benz bus pulled up, the alleged robbers came out of their hideout in a nearby bush and ordered the passengers to get down.
He said just about the same time, a police patrol team which was escorting a number of vehicles from Buipe to Kintampo arrived at the scene, and seeing the police, the alleged robbers started to fire at them. The only person to have alighted from the vehicle at the time the police arrived was the driver’s mate.
According to Supt Boampong, the police quickly returned fire and the two died while the rest managed to flee back into the bush and since it was late in the night, the police could not pursue them.
He said when day broke, the police went back to the scene to comb for the alleged robbers, but did not find them. The bodies of the deceased robbers have been deposited at the Kintampo Hospital morgue.
Mr Boampong said in view of the frequent armed robbery attacks on the trunk road, the police had decided to escort vehicles from Kintampo to Buipe in the Northern Region while another patrol team also did same from Buipe to Kintampo at 9:00.p.m every night.
The District Police Commander said the bus was among those which were being escorted by the police at a slow pace but alleged that the driver, who could not withstand the limited speed, decided to overtake the other vehicles, including the patrol car, at Benkrom and unfortunately met the fire on the road and the subsequent order by the robbers.
