A 43 year-old farmer at Nsentenaso in the Brong Ahafo Region is said to have shot himself after killing his wife in a bloody end to a 15 year-old marriage.
The bodies of the couple were found in a pool of blood near a shotgun and two shells of bullets by a woman who raised an alarm to attract some farmers, who in turn informed the police.
The bodies were later identified, as those of Yaw Yeboah, alias Oppong Yaw, and his wife, Adwoa Kumi, 37, and they have been deposited at the Presbyterian Hospital Mortuary at Dormaa Ahenkro, while police continue with investigations.
Yaw Oppong was said to have pursued his wife, Adwoa Oppong, who was running to another village after a quarrel had ensued between them at about 9.00 a.m. and shot her in the forehead at close range, after which he shot himself through the right lower jaw.
The Dormaa District Police Commander, Superintendent N.K Ali said during the quarrel, Oppong had stabbed his wife in the forehead with a sharp object.
Sensing danger, he said, the woman decided to run away to a nearby village to seek protection, adding that when the woman took to her heels to seek refuge in the nearby village, Oppong loaded his shotgun, pursued her and caught up with her midway to the village.
He said at close range, Oppong shot his wife, then quickly loaded the gun again and blew his own head off through the lower right jaw.
Supt Ali said when the police got to the scene of the incident, they found the gun and two empty shells and conveyed the bodies to the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
The acting General Manager of the hospital, Dr David Agyepong, gave the cause of the death of the couple as death from gunshots.
He confirmed that the woman was shot at close range, with one of the pel1ets piercing through her forehead and leaving an opening at the back of her head.
The couple had stayed for 15 years and had three children, including a set of twins, and that it was while the children were at school that the incident happened.
