A Tema circuit court has fined 12 drivers GH ¢ 2,644 (¢26,440,OOO) or in default they will serve various prison terms in hard labour for committing motor traffic offences at Ashaiman.
Daniel Tetteh, who drove without a license was slapped with the highest fine of GH¢600 (¢16 million) and a day's imprisonment or in default serve six months in prison.
A statement signed by the Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia Yeboah, said the Ashaiman Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service mounted an operation on July 12 to arrest drivers to curb the spate of motor accidents in and around Ashaiman.
It said Abraham Noi Adumuah, a taxi driver, was fined GH ¢480 (¢4.8 million) for driving without a license and with an expired insurance certificate, while Samuel Agidi was fined GH ¢264 (¢2,640,OOO) for driving through the red light.
William Attipoe received a fine of GH ¢240 (¢2.4 million) or three months imprisonment for failing to comply with traffic directions given by a policewoman on traffic duty at the Ashaiman Night Market Junction.
The statement said the remaining offenders were fined smaller amounts for causing road obstruction, insecure loading, overloading, failing to renew income tax, use of motor vehicles in dangerous condi¬tions, loading and offloading at unauthorised places, among others.
In another development, the Tema Regional Police Public Affairs Unit has appealed to accident vehicle owners to clear their vehicles from the Ashaiman Tulaku Police Barrier or have them auctioned.
