The Asante-Akim South District Directorate of Education has organized a day’s workshop for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration committees at Juaso.
The workshop, which formed part of the 2007 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), was aimed at equipping the participants to help candidates to undertake error-free BECE registration.
The 48-member committee made up of parents, teachers and officials from the district office of the Ghana Education Service (GES) were sensitised on how to play their respective roles effectively to ensure a smooth school selection and placement for Junior Secondary School (JSS) graduates in the district.
Mrs Regina Obeng Somuah, District Officer in-charge of Examinations and Training, said the CSSPS was a better placement system for BECE candidates and charged stakeholders to responsibly contribute to its success.
She entreated teachers to keep reliable records of performance of pupils to help in determining the choice of schools and programmes for candidates.
She further urged teachers to endeavour to cover the syllabus and regularly assess pupils to adequately prepare them for the BECE, adding that, the performance of candidates was crucial to their placement.
According to Mrs Somuah, since placement of candidates would be determined by performance, available vacancies and choice of programme, it was imperative for pupils to assess themselves academically and choose schools they were likely to gain admission.
"Admission to schools and programmes are very competitive. Candidates are therefore entreated to work hard to get the school and programme of their choice", Mrs Somuah added.
She cautioned candidates to refrain from examination malpractices, which she said could ruin their future and called on parents to monitor the academic performance of their wards.
