Three policemen and a civilian who allegedly robbed a Wa-based businessman of GH¢2, 200 have been arrested and detained by the Wa regional police command.
The four suspects, Daniel Ofori, Edward Mantey and Justice Boah, all constable escorts, and Benjamin Botchway, an employee of Airtel Communications, were said to have besieged the house of one Mr Ganew Ahmed Foroko, a Wa-based businessman, on suspicion that he had some contraband cigarettes in his house.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kofi Danso Adei-Acheampong, who briefed the Daily Graphic in Wa, said about 11:45.p.m. on August 12, 2011, Mantey and Boah, who were on guard duties at some banks in the Wa Municipality, decided to abandon their duty posts.
He said the two, who were then in uniform and holding rifles, engaged Ofori who was off duty and together asked Benjamin Botchway to drive them in his pick-up to the house of Mr Foroko for an operation.
He said upon reaching the house, the three policemen entered and told the complainant, Mr Foroko, of their mission.
Mr Adei-Acheampong said the policemen went ahead to search the room and when they did not find any illegal cigarettes as they claimed, Boah, who had apparently spotted a bag containing money during the search, picked the bag and quickly left the room.
The police commander said realising immediately that his bag containing GH¢2,200 and other items was not in the room, Mr Foroko raised an alarm which made the policemen run into the waiting vehicle which was being driven by Botchway and sped off amid shouts from some residents.
He said Mr Foroko quickly reported the case to the regional police command. Boah and his accomplices were subsequently arrested and detained after preliminary investigations.
Mr Adei Acheampong said his outfit was awaiting instructions from the police headquarters for the next line of action.
