Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder in Tema of Nii Kwatey Quartey, a retired worker of the Public Works Department. The police are, however, reluctant to release any further information on the latter but have solicited public support in finding the perpetrators of the July 17, 2007 murder. The Minister of the Interior, Albert Kan-Dapaah, announced this in Tema over the weekend when he joined members of the Rotary Club of Tema to launch an appeal of funds towards a police station project to serve important areas of the Tema township. "Important arrests have been made and we are happy with the progress of the investigations," the minister said in his address at the launch, which coincided with the inauguration of a new executive to run the club. As of last Saturday, the minister also said, two arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Rokko Frimpong, the Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank, who was also attacked and killed in his Spintex Road residence on June 19, 2007. However, because of the state of investigations, he maintained, no further details could be given. The two murders were among seven high-profile homicides dating back from January 2005, as recounted by the Minis¬ter. The other cases involved a former Deputy Managing Director in charge of Finance and Administration at Ghana Telecom, Mr Boateng, who was killed at Dome Pillar Two in Accra in January 2005; Nana Bretuo III, the Chief of Nyankumase-Adansi in the Ashanti Region who was killed on May 31, last year; Nana Badu Boakye Dankwa of MimAkyiase, near Kumasi, who was killed on December 12, last year; Samuel Ennin, the Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association, who was killed on February 9, this year, and a 71-year-old Lebanese businessman, Zakaria Dennaoui, who was killed on April 28, this year. In each of those cases, he said, investigations had progressed well, with important arrests made in the cases of Nana Bretuo, Nana Boakye Dankwa, Samuel Ennin, as well as Dennaoui, and assured the public that the perpetrators would all be rounded up in due course. Mr Kan-Dapaah called for community support for the police in the effort to prevent crime in society, admitting that "we cannot possibly have a totally crime-free nation. The important thing is to have a Police Service that has the capacity to discourage the commission of crime, as well as the capacity to apprehend the few who commit crimes". He said the police had revised their strategies, including an intensified collection of intelligence information on criminal activities and gangs, to deal with the rising crime wave and urged the public to support the state security machinery in that exercise. The police station, which will be situated at Community 11 in Tema, is meant to serve Communities 6, 10, 11 and 12 to help curb the rising spate of criminal activities, especially armed robbery, within those areas. The new President of the club, Albert Armah, who succeeded Rotarian Ako Odotei, said the project would cost GH c 50,OOO (500 million cedis) and urged individuals and corporate institutions to contribute towards it.
