Marseille defeated Ligue 1 champions Lille 5-4 in a remarkable match in Tangier to pick up the Trophee des Champions, recovering from a 3-1 deficit with just six minutes of regular time left as the fixture reached a staggering climax.
Goals from Florent Balmont and Eden Hazard seemed to have pushed Lille into a safe position, but OM showed their resolve by striking through Andre Ayew. Moments later, Moussa Sow’s strike again seemed to have put the game beyond the Provence club, but strikes in the last five minutes from Jeremy Morel and Loic Remy drew Didier Deschamps’ men level.
With a minute of time to play, Aurelien Chedjou was dismissed for a foul on Jordan Ayew and brother Andre struck from the spot. Marko Basa headed Lille level, but Andre Ayew completed his hat-trick with a second penalty to seal the win four minutes into stoppage time.
After withstanding an early barrage, the northerners took the lead through a well-worked free kick. Eden Hazard’s set piece was tucked back to the edge of the box, where Balmont sent a laser of a drive into Steve Mandanda’s bottom left-hand corner.
Marseille, however, had made the much brighter start to the game, drawing Lille goalkeeper Mickael Landreau into action frequently in the early stages. Debutant Jeremy Morel enjoyed a strong start down the left, sending a dangerous cross just in front of Lucho Gonzalez, who would be denied minutes later by a smart block as he followed up a Morgan Amalfitano shot that had smacked the face of the post.
Even after this moment, the early siege was not over. Amalfitano fizzed a shot wide of goal and Landreau again had to be sharp to turn a dangerous header from Stephane Mbia over the top.
Lille would offer a persistent and meaningful threat on the break, but they were well contained by Marseille, though the Provence club couldn’t offer the kind of penetration that they had shown early in the half.
Amalfitano’s charge down the right channel might have brought a stoppage time goal, but the former Lorient man elected to shoot from a testing angle and was denied by the on-form Landreau.
Immediately after the restart, coach Didier Deschamps’ side continued to look the more offensively-minded unit. Andre Ayew came to the fore with a couple of penetrative runs, but his best efforts at goal were wide.
And just as OM had been hit with a sucker-punch in the first half, they would be similarly winded early in the second period. Hazard was their scourge on this occasion, leaving Souleymane Diawara standing on the edge of the box before firing through the legs of Mandanda.
Marseille did not allow this blow to deflate them, and they found a way back into the game when Lucho found Andre Ayew, whose shot flew past Landreau and into the net.
The Ghanaian’s goal only gave OM hope for a matter of seconds as another defensive lapse was punished by clinical Lille. Obraniak’s solo run across the pitch was matched by a lovely pass slipped through to Sow, who showed that he has lost none of his clinical form of last season by slipping a shot into the Marseille goal.
Again OM would show their character, getting back into the match as Morel sent a thumping low shot from range beyond Landreau.
With only a few minutes left on the clock, this strike appeared a mere consolation, but Remy’s late equaliser was to prove only the start of the drama.
Chedjou would be dismissed as he conceded a penalty for a foul on Jordan Ayew, which allowed the Ghanaian’s older brother to covert coolly from 12 yards.
Now Lille were the side who seemed down and out, but despite their numerical disadvantage levelled in stoppage time, as Basa was allowed a free header six yards out.
The match appeared poised for penalties, but when Andre Ayew tumbled to the ground under a foul from Benoit Pedretti, he was able to slot home again from the penalty spot, sealing an utterly remarkable victory.
Marseille, therefore, lift the first French trophy of the season, but if this match was a taste of things to come this term in Ligue 1, fans are certainly in for a treat.
