The National Democratic Congress MP for Yagaba Kubori, Ibrahim Abdul-Rauf Tanko faces possible suspension from Parliament if the Privileges Committee of the House finds him guilty of improper conduct.
The MP slapped his NDC colleague from Juabeso, Sampson Ahi before the commencement of Thursday's parliamentary proceedings.
He has since apologised to his colleague, and according to the Minority Leader, Alban Bagbin, the victim has accepted the apology.
Mr. Ahi was alleged to have asked Mr. Tanko, who was sitting in his path to allow him space to pass, however the Yagaba MP took offence and slapped his colleague.
The chairman of the privileges committee of parliament, Freddy Blay, says if a formal complaint is lodged, Mr. Tanko could be sanctioned.
“If you assault any individual that, to say the least is quite criminal and could lead to some prosecution but on the other hand and in accordance with our own standing orders it’s an offence the victim of the assault could lodge a complaint with the leadership of the House.”
The Minority Leader has condemned the violent conduct of Mr. Tanko. And said the NDC will investigate the matter.
“We will go on and we’ll take the matter definitely to the party and we will discuss it. whatever sanctions are agreed on by the party we will try to apply that.”
