The Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare on Friday certified that Western Steel and Forgings Limited (WSFL), which suffered an industrial accident some weeks ago, have complied with safety measures to avert future occurrence.
Mr Antwi Boasiako Sekyere, Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, who made this known in Tema during an inspection of the premises of the factory said: “Indeed I have convinced myself that the requirements and recommendations made by the Factories Inspectorate Department of the Ministry have been met.”
“The place looks conducive and ready for effective operations, which will allow the workers to operate without hindrance. The necessary occupational health and safety measures are now in place,” he stressed.
Mr Boasiako asked the Management of WSFL to fix the defective oxygen plant of the factory and invite personnel of the Factory Inspectorate Unit and the Ministry to inspect the facility to enable the factory to operate at optimal level.
The Minister advised the factory authorities to ensure that the standards attained are sustained and improved upon.
He said the Factories Inspectorate Department of the Employment Ministry would be well resourced to enable the personnel to carry out their duties effectively.
Mr Andrew Quayson, Consultant of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) said the body was committed to help industries to create and maintain a safety culture and best housekeeping measures and has therefore constituted a training team to facilitate the process.
He said next week the team would be at WSFL to train the personnel.
Mr Felix Adjei Boye, Acting Chief Inspector of Factories lauded WSFL for complying with the observations and recommendations made by the inspectorate, adding that personnel from the Department would monitor the operations of the factory to ensure high standards.
Mr Seth Twum-Akwaboah, Acting Executive Director of the AGI, said it was a policy that every member of the Industry should observe international standards of operations to remain competitive globally.
He said the weaknesses identified at WSFL had been fixed to satisfaction, adding “I am satisfied with the work done”.
Mr Stephen Ankamah- Lomotey, Metropolitan Director of Factories called for a visible safety culture in the company.
Mr William Kwakye, Union Chairman expressed satisfaction about efforts by Management to ensure safety at the premises.
Nana Ofosua Tamakloe, Corporate and Human Resource Director of WSFL said Management worked very hard through the collaboration of the workers to transform the working environment.
“We will make sure that safety, healthy and environmental policies are adhered to. That is our goal number one.”
The factory was closed down by the Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr Enoch Teye Mensah after three industrial accidents.
In line with official directives the WSFL carried out test runs with the permission and consent of the Factories Inspectorate Department of the Social Welfare Ministry.
WSFL is Ghana’s premier steel and forging company, with a steel ingot manufacturing facility that produces 3,500mt ingots per month. The company has a 16” automatic mill and can roll 6,000mt of iron rods per month.
It forges balls for gold Mines and has the capacity to produce 2,000mt of forged balls per month. It also and has an oxygen plant and drum making plant that produces 15,000 drums per month.
WSFL a solely owned Ghanaian company was established in 2005 is one of four steel mills operating in the country. It currently has a work force of about 600 workers, made up of 440 permanent staff.
