Mr. Ray Quarcoo, a seasoned Business Executive renowned for his association with sports sponsorship and development has been appointed Goodwill Sports Ambassador by President John Evans Atta Mills.
The appointment which was made on Tuesday, 1st June, 2011 was communicated to Mr. Quarcoo per a letter signed by Hon. Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
According to the letter the appointment of Mr. Quarcoo was in full acknowledgement and recognition of the significant role he has played and still continues to play in developing sports, especially boxing in the country. He however charged him to use the good office of his new appointment to mobilize both national and international goodwill, solidarity and support to further enhance requisite infrastructure and capacity for the advancement of sports in the country.
Mr. Ray Quarcoo, who is a Patron of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), has been associated with sports promotion and development since the 1980s and has made a lot of contributions to the development of boxing especially. He has held various positions in the administration of sports in the country, notable among these were his appointment as the 1st Vice Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) in 2001); Vice Chairman/Acting Chairman of Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation for a second term in 1998.;Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Welfare Committee and a member of the National Sports Council between 1991 and 1993.
In the fulfillment of his mandate, the Goodwill Sports Ambassador will work closely with both the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council to seek sponsorships for the national sports teams; training of coaches, officials and procurement of equipment particularly for the Regional Boxing Clubs (Associations). He is to arrange for exchange and joint training programmes with friendly countries in Europe, United States, Asia and Africa; seek sports scholarships for young brilliant athletes to study abroad and more importantly, help build strong cultural and strategic bilateral relations in the area of sports between Ghana and other countries.
