Mr Kwame Gyasi, Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB), said investments in the tourism sector in the Region are picking up at a fast rate.
“Gradually, people within and outside are beginning to realize that the Volta Region is Ghana at a glance and are making a lot of investments in the industry”, he said.
Mr Gyasi made the assessment in an interview with Ghana News Agency at the side lines of a seminar for some players in the hospitality industry from the Region in Ho on Tuesday.
It was organized by the GTB and Cleaning Solutions Limited, a manufacturer and supplier of cleaning and hygiene products.
Mr Gyasi said the special geographical features of the Region and its strategic location makes it the only area which has a bit of everything that attracts tourists to Ghana.
“We have forests, mountains, rivers, the sea” and diversities of Ghanaian languages and cultures in the region, he said.
Mr Gyasi said these potentials and attractions needed to be promoted and marketed to make the Region the first choice for investors, up from its second position to the Western region.
Mr Sulemana Amadu, Resource Officer of the GTB, said over the years, hotel occupancy and number of visits to places of attraction in the Region had improved, an indication that people were investing in tourism.
“For instance in two years, hotels in Ho have increased from 18 to 34 and the Municipality is now witnessing a lot of tourism and social events regularly,” he said.
Mr Nelson Agbavor, Volta Regional Secretary of the Ghana Hotels Association, called on Government to support the private sector to grow and become stronger if the country’s economy is to become solid.
He underscored the importance of regular in-service training of workers and commended organizers of the seminar for the initiative.
Mr Agbavor urged employers to allow the trainees to implement skills and knowledge acquired at the seminar.
Participants were taken through customer care, kitchen hygiene and general housekeeping.
