Chelsea midfield dynamo and Ghanaian international Michael Essien, has stated that the upcoming football match between some of Africa’s best players and the world’s most revered players is intended to create awareness on the necessity of peace on the continent. The match, which will come off on the 25 May at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra is expected to climax the AU day celebrations. Michael Essien, an AU Peace Ambassador, who is organizing the event told Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM “the whole idea is to create awareness and to promote peace in Africa, as you can see what is happening in some African countries.” “Hopefully through football we can spread the message across and I think Africans love football and it is easier to use football to spread the message,” he explained. He declined to disclose the names of the stars coming to town insisting that Ghanaians should hold their breath for the kind of stars who will arrive on Tuesday. Touching on the performance of his club this season, Essien said “it’s been a very disappointing season for us (Chelsea). Now the season is over we are going to go for a break and hopefully come back and hopefully have a good season.” He said the team struggled a bit during the winter and even though they worked hard to turn the tables around, it was difficult to do so. On his return to the Black Stars, Essien said Ghanaians should not expect too much for he is the same Michael Essien. “I am very happy to make myself available to come back to the squad and try help my country qualify to the next Africa Cup of Nations.” This will be the first time in a little over a year since Michael Essien played a competitive or a friendly game on the African continent after sustaining an injury during the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. He has also been invited to join the Black Stars as the team prepares for the Nations Cup qualifiers against DR. Congo in Kumasi. Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
