The general public has been cautioned by the Tema police to examine the weight of cement they purchase to avoid buying underweight ones.
The Tema Regional Police Commander, ACP John Kudalor told the press in Tema that some unscrupulous cement sellers repackage GHACEM's 50 kilograms bag of cement into 40 kilogram and sell it at a reduced price compared to the original pack.
ACP Kudalor noted that, the Harbour police patrol unit on their usual rounds about 0400 hours on Thursday chanced on one Quist Mawutor, 40, and Paul Kwabena, 45 repackaging cement they have off loaded from a truck behind the UBA bank in community one.
He said the suspects had empty bags of cements in which they were filling in 40 kilograms of cement instead of the original 50 kilograms and sell them to unsuspecting customers.
He said the police also suspects that other chemicals are added to the cement before it is repacked.
ASP Kudalor said when the officer in charge of the Harbour Railway Police was preparing to take Mawutor and Kwabena to the police station one Godfred Tei Kwesi, 37 and a friend, Joseph Kojo, 38 all cement sellers approached him and pleaded for their release claiming they were their employees.
Kwesi and Kojo were also arrested when they attempted bribing DSP Dentsi with three million cedis (GH¢ 300).
ACP Kudalor said the four suspects would be arraigned before court after investigations and that the bribe money and the two bags of the repacked cement, which the police weighed at GHACEM, would be used as exhibits.
