Former Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Herbert Mensah, has criticized government for doing little to support victims and families of the May 9th disaster that occurred at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The 2001 tragedy claimed the lives of 126 soccer fans following a stampede after a league match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The stampede after the police fired teargas to disperse rampaging supporters of both teams.
Today, May 9, 2011, marks the 10th anniversary of Africa's worst football related tragedy.
Though six police officers were put before court on a charge of manslaughter for their roles in the disaster, they were freed for lack of evidence.
As Ghana commemorates what has become known as the Black Wednesday, Mr. Mensah says government has failed in its responsibilities to the victims and their dependants.
He was speaking to families of the victims in Kumasi.
Mr. Mensah called on soccer fans to be guided by the disaster and refrain from acts that make the sports stadium an unsafe place.
Some victims and families of the disaster were presented with food items and an undisclosed amount of money.
