A 28-year-old unemployed at Aflao believed to be a member of an armed gang, which robbed passengers on three vehicles of personal belongings and cash at Agorko, on the Aflao-Keta road on June 23, this year has been remanded in custody by a circuit court at Aflao.
Reuben Kportufe's plea was not taken.
Also remanded with him was Angela Ankrah, 25, accused of aiding and abetting the gang. They will be brought before the court again on July 20.
Michael Ayaribilla, a Police Chief Inspector told the court presided over by Group-Captain Martin Obeng-Ntim (rtd.) that Kportufe and some others now at large armed with single barrel short guns and some in masks blocked the Aflao-Keta road with cement blocks and a discarded vehicle carrier at Agorko at about 01:00 hours on June 23, this year with the intent to rob.
He said an Aflao-Takoradi bound Benz bus with registration number GR 4268 U taking the detour through Keta to Sogakope with many foreigners hit the roadblock and had to stop.
Mr Ayaribilla said the robbers emerged from the bush firing indiscriminately and hitting the windscreen of the bus and then set on the passengers, beat them and robbed them of mobile phones, cash and ornaments.
He said two unarmed soldiers, one and his wife driving from Keta towards Aflao in a taxi cab were made to lie face down and beaten before their cash and mobile phones were taken from them.
Mr Ayaribilla said the third vehicle attacked was an articulated truck whose driver and mate were robbed of their phones and cash.
He said Kportufe was identified by some of the victims of the robbery at the beach at Aflao and was arrested together with Angela who was with him.
Mr Ayaribilla said a search in Kportufe's room revealed a military waist belts and caps.
