Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested a self-styled soldier for allegedly collecting various sums from unsuspecting members of the public under the pretext of assisting them enlist in the Ghana Armed Forces.
Thirty-six-year-old Charles Denteh who claimed to be an army captain was arrested on Sunday at his hide-out at Old Tafo in Kumasi following a tip-off from one of his victims.
Six people from whom he took a total of ¢15 million (GH¢1500) have already submitted statements to the police.
Divisional Police Commander Chief Supt. Augustine Gyening told Kumasi-based Luv FM that the police had for the previous three weeks been trailing the imposter who confessed to the crime on arrest.
He said in one case Denteh took ¢6.3 million (GH¢630) from a victim, after boasting variously as a member of the Defence intelligence and as the Second in Command of the Northern Command, promising that he would get the victims enlisted without going through any formalities.
The police were yet to collect other incriminating documents Denteh took from some of his victims, including birth certificates, to provide evidence for his prosecution.
